The Fuji SL 1.3 is part of the new breed of ultralight bikes, the ones that combine a low weight, with improved comfort and stiffness to the ultimate race machine for those days when the road points uphill, and saving every watt is absolutely crucial. The SL 1.3 may look outwardly similar to the Grand Tour-winning Altamira, but under the hood everything has been updated, revised, and improved. Fuji's High Compaction Molding System has been honed and perfected over the years to create the stiffest possible frame with the least amount of material. By ensuring that the carbon sheets are free of wrinkles, and the resin has been evenly applied, the engineers can make the bike stiffer and lighter, with less variation in the carbon. The C15 high modulous carbon carbon construction is about as stiff as you would ever want a bike to be, and, when coupled with a PF30 bottom bracket and tapered headtube, will transfer just about every watt in your pedal stroke into forward motion. In the rear, Fuji kept the pencil thin seatstays we all loved on the Altamira, adding some compliance to the frame for a smoother ride, but switched from a 31.6mm seatpost to a 27.2mm, adding in a little more forgiveness for bad roads and shedding some weight. Oh, and you wanted to know about tire clearance? The SL now clears a 28mm tire (depending on the brand) , so you can throw on some cushier rubber for the ultimate in smooth sailing comfort. But the Fuji SL story isn't just about having a great frame. Fuji is known for spec'ing great parts on their bikes to help riders squeeze out every possible watt of performance. Shifting duties are handled by Shimano's superlative Dura-Ace 9070 Di2 groupset, the winningest groupset in the world. Coming in with a weight less than mechanical Dura-Ace 9000, 9070 Di2 provides bar none the best shifting anywhere. The electronic, computer controlled derailleurs shift perfectly every time, with no need to ever adjust them. The front shifting in particular is amazing, with huge amounts of torque that make shifting to the big ring under power not only possible, but easy. Plus, the expandable and programmable system means that you can add on things like climbing remote shifters, or reprogram the system to shift how you want it to. With Dura-Ace 9070 Di2, the possibilities are pretty much endless. And if you're worried about battery life, don't be. Di2 gets about 1,500 miles, or 50,000 shifts, per charge, with ample warning that it's time to top up the juice before it runs out. The SL 1.3 rolls on a set of Oval Concepts 724 aero alloy clinchers. These wheels are deceivingly lightweight and tubeless ready, so you get the full benefit of all the latest trends in wheel design in a great package.
